Choosing Proper Fishing Line
By: Michael Boldig
Whether you are an amateur angler or a professional fisherman, the type of fishing line you choose can make all the difference in a trophy caught and a trophy lost. Decide the application and style you will be fishing to choose the proper line. The following steps are useful tips to help make an informed decision on the line to cast.
- Areas with heavy vegetation will call for a tough thin line such as a braided or fusion line. Fluorocarbon and monofilament lines work well in clear water conditions because when the light refracts off the line it becomes invisible under the water surface. Monofilaments, braids and fusion lines work well in rough rocky areas.
- Determine how much stretch is acceptable for your style of fishing. The more the fishing line stretches, the more forgiveness while reeling in a big fish. A fishing line with minimal stretch improves the sensitivity. All monofilament line stretches, and some stretch up to 30%. Fluorocarbon line has less stretch than monofilament, and braid has no stretch.
- The application in which you are going to be fishing is important. In stained, muddy, and heavy vegetation waters stick with a dark colored line like green or brown. In clear waters like streams or lakes opt for a clear or blue fishing line. Choose fluorescent colors when increased visibility of your fishing line is required; remember these lines appear to be just as visible to the fish.
